TDB Episode 7 Thoughts

So this episode sort of felt like a filler chapter between "Meeting the Ghouls" and "the Laurel Crown" arcs of the story. I didn't mind since I really like Yuri and Jiro's dynamic, but the pacing of the story was very quick and not a whole lot happened, after an Episode as loaded with action as Obscuary's it can feel a bit like a let down.

Now as for specific thoughts:

I want to start by saying I appreciate how Yuri doesn't believe in the prophecy because it isn't scientific but 100% thinks he is the chosen one, the champion anyway. Yes, have that self confidence that is nothing but a paper shell built on lies to cover your insecurities king! We love a pathetic meow meow in this house!

His connection to Frostheim... I have had this crack theory in my head that he is related to Jin somehow, like maybe he's his brother or something, but I do think how he talks about Frostheim makes me think he is either a transfer to Mortranken or used to be closer to Jin than he is now. We all are pretty sold on Haku being the one who sold Jin out, but there is a chance it could have been Yuri too I suppose.

We were right! Zenji and Jiro are brothers! And we have Zenji's real name, Taro Kirisaki! He doesn't seem to hate it or anything he is just really proud of his role as a man of the quill so he uses a pen name.

Zenji really loves his brother huh. "If anything were to happen to him I might not survive it this time round" I'd be willing to bet that whatever happened to the Krisaki brothers was connected, it's just that Zenji got dumped at Darkwick General while Jiro was taken in by Yuri. Zenji's voicelines about a brother "in his rebellious phase" and his struggle to express his love for his older brother makes me think they might have been at odds before the clash... maybe Jiro hated how laid back Zenji was when he literally made a deal with a demon? Of course he did too... but maybe Zenji's was related to trying to make Jiro healthy? He seems to have some sort of auto-immune disease and while that could be a side-effect of the coma but it could also be something Jiro's always struggled with and explain why Zenji is so protective of him. I bet they were killed by the same anomaly...

Sorry I have a lot of feelings about the Kirisaki brothers... what happened to them? Why does no one care that they're dead and dying other than Yuri? I don't think Zenji cares that much that Jiro doesn't remember him so long as he's alive... but would it bother Jiro if he could remember? Does he ever find himself making tea and turn to scold someone for talking too much, he's being annoying again but there isn't anyone there and he doesn't know who he's scolding because it wasn't Yuri... does he know how to make tea because Zenji insisted on teaching him? Is Zenji the one who he would tease about being afraid of dead bodies before MC?

Right on not simp notes: we have more information about the murder, the victim was from Ultio! And the murder predated the Clash so it's pretty safe to say the inability of the school to find the murderer is probably what kicked things off.

We also have hints of a mermaid student, so be patient fish fuckers we- I mean you will be getting fed soon. This student seems to be known to Yuri and Haru, and Haru's reaction suggests he might think of him as a friend? He's not beating the Steve Irwin allegations is he, I'm surprised Ed isn't obsessed with him at this point. Then again I think Ed would resent me implying he's an animal, but we've seen the inside of his room so I rest my case.

Nicholas appears to be in hot water with the Institute, and he is not trusted by Yuri. Cornelius references something he calls "the Dionysia breakout" as being Nicholas's fault to contain... given that those students are missing and Nicholas has only recently found them... I want more information before I say anything but Yuri's explanation of how he sees anomalous anything illnesses I think it makes sense to say an anomaly outbreak occurred in the Dionysia dorm that was not contained by its ghouls, something the school blames Nicholas for.

The school knew the MC was going to turn into an anomaly and did not tell her "for her mental health." I like MC's mixed feelings on this. On the one hand I don't think she would have handled it well if we had learned it immediately. On the other, I am a firm believer that information is not something that should be gate kept, and hey. It's the MC's life she deserves to know what happened to her. I think I land on not trusting Darkwick but I do trust Yuri, I want to know why he's so determined to cure MC but I don't doubt his sincerity in the slightest. If I had to say who is most determined to see MC cured, I'd say its Yuri and Haru. And Zenji but he's out of commission at the moment. Yuri has an ego the size of his forehead, but he does seem very passionate about curing anomalous diseases and takes failures a bit more personally than he'll ever admit to. Haru is just a stand up guy who seems like he wants the best for those he loves, and he really does seem to love MC! He says he'd trust her with his life! That's my dorm captain he's literally the best <3

The tree is curious, one of the fruits looked a bit better, but then it shrunk after the announcement of the Laurel Crown and the Gala coming back... which I guess makes sense? The ghouls are fighting again, technically, and if their hate for each other is what makes the tree sick then I don't think it is going to get better. Speaking of the tree... poor MC.

Yuri's description of an anomaly that could destroy the world does match up with how Ed describes the Kyklos. Dani and I talked about this already, but that name (in addition to being super similar sounding to cyclops explaining why she has one eye) is ancient greek for cycle. It is typically used to refer to a theory about human history that depicts it as being a cycle between Dark and Golden ages, how this monster came to be is something I'd be super interested to learn about... I have some theories but they're 100% pure Colombian crack with no evidence.

That being said, Ed knows what it is but Darkwick's staff does not... Ed revealing the MC is going to turn into a monster to the whole student body makes a lot of sense for him to do actually. He sees it as him helping the MC because he wants the ghouls to compete to cure her, and knowing how he thinks of humans he probably assumed they wouldn't do so unless there was an incentive so that's why he made that the goal the dorms would have to meet to win the Laurel Crown.

Speaking of which... Sho. Shohei. Hyde has him doing a special mission, wonder what that is huh? Whatever it is, that's suspicious. That's weird. I've got both my eyes on you Mr. Playboy, Lyca wouldn't do this to me maybe he should get to keep the babygirl title.

... also I really love the "if it were not for the laws of this land I would have killed you" vibes Rui, Tohma, and Haku had during their little conversation. I was dying, "oh hiiiii Rui :D so nice to see you NOT IN THE SHADOWS STALKING ME. DID YOU KNOW HE CAN DO THAT MC? GO INTO SHADOWS AND STALK YOU? NO???" Haku just being like "teehee maybe MC and I are a thing Tohma" and Tohma leaving that on read because who cares? Not him his interests are classified but I swear its ntr- *i am shot and dragged from the premises*

Mission wise, i enjoyed it!!! Tho it made me feel a little like the hotarubi episode where they kinda summed up the conclusion pretty quickly and then shit hit the fan. Nonetheless, i liked it! Working with yuri and jiro was fun?????? which tbh i was pleasantly surprised (sorry kings i've misjudged u). Yuri might have a praise kink and have his ego the size of a planet but !! there's no denying he's passionate about his work and so far YEAH he is the only who got mc the closest of finding her cure so !!! (and i love seeing him fighting for his life when he isn't right about something)). Jiro...jiro 🫂 i love that autistic man etcetcetc

SO HAPPY WE GOT CANON CONFIRMATIONS!!!!! KIRISAKI BROTHERS!!!!!!! ohhh i was CHEESING!! zenji's (or should i say taro🥹) love for his baby bro is precious❤️‍🩹 a dead man saying he would not survive if something were to happen to his brother...if thats not the purest form of love then idk what is.

From one sus professor to another.. (it seems to be the pattern on every episode so far). Personally i dont think it'll be as bad as the game lead us on (as we've seen with nicolas on this episode), but it definitely raises more questions. Why romeo? What deal do they have? Is money the root of it? Or something else?? And if hyde is lying to both romeo and sho about being the only ones who know about this "mission", could he have asked other ghouls as well??? Anyways, we'll most likely get this answered next month.

Ofc there is a mermaid (alive!! alive?). We have the vampy, the wolfy, now mermaid (elf/fairy 🔜) . Cant wait for us to meet him and what he'll bring to the plot (and his relationship?with haru)(when will they mention his hand and what happened to it??)

Im still puzzled about the whole ordeal with the tree.... i'll leave the theories for the smart ppl in the fandom hgjdjd

Back to the auditorium scene, aside from me being biased loving ed's old man antiques, i absolutely loved his move of putting on blast the academy/chancellor lies and once again making the statement that he Knows Everything and won't hesitate to reveal stuff if necessary. And then taking his leave like a bad bitch!!!

My thoughts after Chapter 7

Spoilers for Tokyo Debunker below please continue with caution:

WOWIE WAS CHAPTER 7 A GOOD ONE!!!

I can say that Mortkranken is a very interesting dorm. And I could be bias because it's a shade of a blue or blue/green I like, but it's coming my favorite.

I know I pick and push calling Jiro a slut but it was mostly based on looks alone. Now actually seeing his character in play I can finally form an opinion on these two characters.

Opinions on Yuri and Jiro :

Jiro - Looks alone he was the one who stood out to be the most, I have a type of liking either assholes or dark gloomy guys in series and seeing Jiro was the cake on top ~ I enjoy seeing him fight and work, learning about him and his illness too was a plus side and I hope to learn more about his character even if it's a side mini thing I hope he returns in the main story.

Yuri - Not gonna lie, I knew his character looks seemed familiar turns out a buddy of mine sent me a photo of him and I proceeded to call him a teal hair Azul Ashengrotto - I do not apologize. I honestly adore this man with my being. He is a bit of a gobber but he is very smart ( obviously he is a doctor). He makes me giggle a bunch so I will definitely be thinking of him.

My thoughts on chapter 7:

I was actually happy that I didn't have to wait long for the Chapter since from when I got into Tokyo Debunker for the first time. Jumping into a new chapter for the new dorm is always exciting even after all we learned in the game up till now. I knew the MC curse wouldn't be solved so easily since now there is a marking on her neck, but it was a good way to introduce Mortkranken into the story line and the characters along with it.

However with the mutated anomaly was a freaky thing itself. But it was perfect in its own way. But I wished they gave us a sprites for the zombies. After Chapter 2, the way they made one for Takeru's ghost the details and the way he moved was so chilling it made me snapped back to the thoughts this had some horror themes to it.

The anomalies in Chapter One weren't scary but they had their own sprites like the characters and they also moved too, if you look closely you can see them swaying, better view as it is looking at their hands. I kind of wished they revisited the idea of Takeru's ghost sprites / it moving to the zombies in Chapter 7. I feel like it would give the players more of an eye opener or give the player some sort of thrill chill.

I won't sit here and complain about that, we can't all have what we want to think, but I think it would have been a nice idea.

At the age of seventy, after years of consolidating his empire, the Great Lord Hidetora Ichimonji decides to abdicate and divide his domain amongst his three sons. Taro, the eldest, will rule. Jiro, his second son, and Saburo, his third son, will take command of the Second and Third Castles but are expected to obey and support their elder brother. Saburo defies the pledge of obedience and is banished.

It's beautiful. It's Kurosawa's biggest, most expensive film. It's about nuclear war and how technology has only made killing easier. It's about Kurosawa's fear that he was old and obsolete. It's an adaptation which asks what sins Lear had to commit to become king. This is the only version of King Lear where Goneril is implied to be a kitsune. (Or, where Albany is a kitsune, however you want to look at it)

A retelling of MacBeth set in feudal Japan. Returning to their lord's castle, samurai warriors Washizu and Miki are waylaid by a spirit who predicts their futures. When the first part of the spirit's prophecy comes true, Washizu's scheming wife, Asaji, presses him to speed up the rest of the spirit's prophecy by murdering his lord and usurping his place.

Overall this just translates the rising sense of the doom and drama of Macbeth so well! The film is also beautifully atmospheric. It really leans into using mist and darkness to set an eerie feeling tone. Shoutout to Washizu’s (Macbeth’s) absolutely wild death scene in this version.

Moody, atmospheric, visually beautiful film that captures the vibe of Macbeth better than any I've seen. The illusion of the trees moving is astonishing (especially if you're lucky enough to see this on a big screen) and Lady M's hand-washing scene is as creepy as you'll ever see. And Toshiro Mifune gives a splendid performance (and is extremely hot).

TL Notes:

In the original, Saburo’s laugh is shown as ぷぷぷ and since that reminded me of the infamous Monokuma laugh, I decided to translate it as “Puhuhu” since that was the english localization for Monokuma’s laugh in the first DR game.

Original line is “あざまる畜産で～す。” (lit: “Us livestocks are thankful~”), I took creative liberties with this one since keeping “livestocks” wouldn’t make much sense in standard english. In the Live2D, it kinda implies Chihiro said this line in a self-deprecating for humor way as well, to keep the situation civil.

Original is “それでは発表します！” (lit: I’m gonna announce it now!”). I changed it for the sake of better flow

something that i’ve been hung up on is taro’s line, “there’s nothing scarier than an ordinary/normal person” because i feel like it represents how he’s truly fearful of ‘ordinary’ people.

‘ordinary’ people are the people who didn't understand taro. it’s the people he grew up around and the people who rallied against him. ordinary people avoided him and found him weird for reasons he couldn’t understand. and most of all, it’s the ordinary people who didn’t come to his birthday celebration when he was a kid.

throughout the series, it becomes evident that taro, despite his cheerful optimism, hasn’t really moved on from his childhood. even though he’s oblivious and doesn’t seem to understand a lot of things (like why lies exist until sonoi explained it to him), he still feels hurt and puts those offhanded comments close to his heart.

you can see this in the episode where shinichi and haruka are asking questions after questions and taro responds that he does what he thinks is right (and that he doesn’t really know what’s going on either). shinichi basically tells him that taro isn’t normal, that he’s different. “unlike you, we’re ordinary people”. while it’s the truth, taro seems visibly affected by his comment, which makes sense. he was isolated and abandoned for not fitting in with the ordinary.

as the series progresses, you see taro go though a pseudo-character arc where he accepts the qualities that makes him different and uses it to protect the members of the donbrother– people he has a “bond” with. from around episode 15-onward, he embraces the fact that he’s different and even says “there’s no one like me. no one can replace me. i’m unique” (not the exact quote but you know what i mean).

throughout donbrothers, taro is searching for a bond, perhaps in the form of a family that offers unconditional support. because he's been abandoned and isolated by 'ordinary' people for the mere fact of being different (not conforming to the norms), he searches and searches for a pseudo-family similar to that the ordinary people have.

a family that taro doesn't have, because he's different.

and i wonder at times if taro has ever tried to 'fit in' and conform to the norms in his childhood. i don't think he would have succeeded because it's sort of implied through his flashbacks that child!taro seems to struggle with the concept of theory of mind.

(theory of mind: the capacity to understand others' mental states and the knowledge that others' mental states may be different from one's own)

taro's form of helping (and maybe even making friends) was (and still is) to bluntly tell what's wrong and correct them by doing it the right way. because in taro's mind, who wouldn't want to do things the right way? he doesn't consider the aspect of pride that people may have, so even if they realize that they were doing something the 'wrong way', they wouldn't appreciate being told such a thing, which is something taro doesn't understand.

i think through continuous isolation and comments of being different made taro realize that he's not like everyone else.

that being said, donbrothers sort of implies that taro exists to help people and that he doesn't exactly have dreams and desires... but that's not exactly the case at all.

he obviously desires for a bond–a family, and maybe even friends. he wished that he and sonoi weren't in the circumstances that they were in ("if you weren't a noto, then we...") and he wished to eat oden with him.

moreover, i feel like there's always a slight expression that can be interpreted as envy and desire whenever taro looks at a family. (ex: when he looked at kijino and miho being happy and when he was pretending to be higashi kouichiro (tomoko's son) and she was attacking the hitotsuki because she wanted to protect her ‘son’)

anyway, taro's comment about jiro becoming 'ordinary' got me thinking a bit because it's said in such a bittersweet way that makes me think that for taro, his companion being 'ordinary' may mean that he's going to be left behind.

and i think the show emphasizes this idea of taro being left behind/being different in various ways, the most interesting ones being that of the noto 123 and miho (juto). even though the noto 123 and miho only resided within the human world for a short period of time, it becomes abundantly clear that they, especially miho, understood humans better than he did/does.

but even though taro felt like he was being left behind (jiro becoming ordinary and the other members of donbrothers having their own lives (symbolized through them leaving in the beginning of 49) ), his companions/family dispelled such thoughts by planning a birthday party for him. haruka and sonoza, who were working on the manga, dropped what they were doing in order to celebrate taro’s ‘birthday’.

it’s a little ironic that taro, who desperately searched for a bond (a family) and was constantly left behind was the one who left everyone in the end. obviously, it was out of his control, but it’s something i think about regardless.

especially because taro finally found a family he’s been searching for such a long time… but the bonds he created were severed and he’s alone all over again, once again searching for a bond.

Do you think buggy feels towards shanks shining so bright it was stupid for buggy to even follow his dreams was only his thoughts or was it “encouraged” by other people around him?

ah, you want to know if i think the roger pirates preferred shanks, and if so how subtle they were about it.

while i do think some fans are very quick to assume ill intent from characters we've gotten no dialogue let alone characterization for, i honestly don't think we can know one way or another without getting more perspective on the roger pirates from someone who isn't buggy.

like, sure, maybe they disliked him and distrusted him as much as he did them. (we can't forget how eager buggy was to leave the crew the minute he thought he'd found financial independence.) maybe he was a bad cultural fit, too scheming and greedy for what appears to have been a fairly honest and carefree crew. maybe the roger crew wasn't as perfectly convivial as it seems in contrast with the unfriendly to the point of antagonism rocks pirates.

or maybe buggy is in a goob situation. y'all know that bit from meet the robinsons, right?

sometimes a character can get so caught up in their own pity party, their own negative self image, that they ignore reality when it disagrees with them. buggy might have been so set in his ways re: his inferiority complex that he saw insults and belittling where none was happening. (this feels quite plausible in buggy's case in particular: look at how quick he is to hear people talking about his nose when they aren't!)

oden's diary is the only other perspective we've gotten on the roger pirates during buggy's lifetime, and buggy doesn't get much individual focus. the closest we get to an insight is when buggy complains about being called buggyjiro, since jiro means second son and he doesn't want to be ranked below shanks.

…but buggy is younger than shanks. oden's treating them like "sons" of the crew by using -taro and -jiro with their names, and birth order is the obvious way to assign those roles. so that objection just comes off as buggy being overly sensitive about where he and shanks rank.

now, could buggy be that sensitive because of being teased or belittled by the crew in the past? maybe! or maybe buggy was one of those kids who didn't know how to play a game without first establishing how to win it, who got competitive over every little thing, even things that were entirely out of his control.

without someone else telling us about those days, i really don't think we can know the truth.

".....I knew Taro, you know. Everyone knew Taro, naturally, he was a social butterfly, like a....Japanese capybara. I didn't pay attention to where he was or what was going on with him. I didn't even know anything was wrong until it was too late to help him. And then Jiro was also in danger, and people wanted to give up on him." He leans back in his chair, closing his eyes and rubbing at them wearily. "I gave up everything for him, to try to make up for not helping Taro."

He sits in silence for a moment. "Nicholas likes to remind me I couldn't have helped Taro. It all happened so quickly and I was one person. But I saved Jiro, didn't I? By myself. That tells me....I could have saved him. If I'd known. If I'd acted. If I'd...." He trails off.

"I can't let Jiro out of my sight. I still hate that I allowed myself to be talked into letting Jiro go with that helminth to the cemetary. Anything could have happened. I could have lost him. Everyone keeps trying to steal him away from me. I can't even sleep, knowing he's in danger...."

Hi! So I was reading your writing and post about what you wouldn't write and was really surprised to see Taiga x Haru on there. They aren't related? Haru is indicated to be chinese (one of his voicelines) and Taiga very much isn't. The other characters that are related to each other have one mention a sibling (brother) long before the reveal of who it is, which isn't the case. They don't look any more similar than any of the other characters via face shape (same face syndrome be rampant in these games), and similar hair color isn't near enough to push that, considering a number of other characters who share hair color... This has just been spinning in my head and I'm baffled. I'm going anon in case this is like... the result of a ship war (idk). But really... There have been plenty of times where Haru has been drunk or alone with Taiga to mention or indicate such a relation and that there hasn't been anything at all. Characters rarely (if ever) say they AREN'T related (Romeo hasn't said that about Taiga, Sho hasn't said that about Leo) so I'm... just really confused? If it's related to Haru's eyes not being shown, I saw somewhere that that's based on him being of similar design to a fox (they said kitsune, but I think that's pushing it a little). If it's just because someone said they thought they were, early on, there hasn't been anything to back it up... and it's a damn shame because there's so much potential with Haru likely having been in Sinostra.

Hello anon! I just wanna say about thanking you for taking the time to write this!

I'm going to try and keep this one short and simple for my sake only cause I am more fully awake, when I first saw it it was the middle of the night (still it but I have a more clear mind ) and was able to think about it more while I slept.

Not gonna lie, when I saw the long message I was, "oh shit I did something didn't I"? Lol, jokes aside though. ( ps I am not upset at the message at all, I am very well happy to explain about this!)

No for the reason why I suddenly place as Haru x Taiga as not to write.

So, actually , I really REALLY have ideas for Taiga x Haru! Like I have some ideas drafted in a doc that I wanna do like small writings for - rambles -

Not to the reason,

I am someone who does read the story to keep up to date, but things don't stick and I tend to miss important details. Which often leads me to play characters a little ooc especially of they are ones that tend to not stick out / be my favorite ones, I have a few buddies who play the game and like to theorize about things, as do I, if I have stuff to help me see it cause y'all I can be slow af it's not funny -

I wasn't sure if one made this as a joke or not but they said what of they reveal Taiga to be Haru's brother -

And I won't lie, I was really 50/50 on it at first - and wanted to play the safe than sorry route for the account if they were revealed as brothers or not. Now thinking about it more, I am sure they were just saying things to say things about the game., I am someone who is easily persuaded. I don't wanna see I am a follower but I am sure as well ain't a leader

About the hair, it could be the shade of Haru's hair that really has been throwing me off guard, I mean really what do you call that color? (Spoiler alert, his wiki says it's a short dark brown and orange hair color, so if my wig comes out wrong someone owes me 12$ because my ass saw red )

Now I think this is where my mind started to clash with itself, I fully assumed then if it was gonna be a big reveal it was like a Zenji and Jiro situation. Not where one is dead, he can clearly tell that Taiga and Haru are alive but like how Zenji's real name isn't Zenji but Taro Kirisaki , Haku called it a nickname while Zenji called it a pen name

I was thinking that it was probably Haru who probably at least changed his last name since imagine being related to Taiga ( sorry Taiga no offense lol). And I think that is where I got spooked at the moment that kind of was the final click in my mind that was telling me not to write it

But one thing I can see clearly as day is Haru being part of Sinostra before Jabberwock. Some of his skills kind of show that he could have ( aka breaking into Ren's room) so I am really hoping they reveal this in the future!

So in the moment I was like, okay I'll just play it safe and not write if in the future they will reveal it but once again anon I would like to say thanking you sending this in and also taking the time to type it all out as well!

I will be taking Taiga x Haru off the not write list

<3> Memories Lost

"Hosshi!"

"There, there, Hosshi. Have some konpeito." Hachi, with a bandage wrapped around his head, held out some sugary konpeito which Hosshi gladly chowed down on. "Eat up now!"

Joker watched them from the sofa. As far as he could piece together, Hachi had hit his head and passed out while Joker was absent. His external injuries seemed to be limited to a large bump on his head.

But internally, it seemed there was something more seriously wrong with Hachi...

Hachi turned and addressed him, "I still don't know who you are, but thank you very much for giving me first aid." Hachi gave a very polite thank-you, which was quite in line for him — except for the part about not knowing who Joker was.

Joker asked with trepidation, "Hey Hachi, you're joking, right?"

"What's this about?" Hachi replied in confusion.

"Well, I mean... you do know who I am, don't you? You're just acting like this 'cause you're still angry about that teacup, yeah?"

"...I'm sorry. I really don't remember," Hachi quietly apologized.

Joker changed his question. "What's your name?"

"Fuuma Hachi."

"Where were you born?"

"The Fuuma ninja village."

"Any siblings?"

"I'm the eighth of ten children. In order, there's Taro, Jiro, Saburo, Shino, Goro, Rokusuke, Nanasuke... then there's me, and Kurumi and Ichimaru are my younger siblings."

"Your hobbies?"

"Cooking, cleaning, and all other household chores."

"Your favorite artist?"

"The Shuffle Sisters, of course! I'm a fan of Ai-chan!"

"Your favorite author."

"Spade King!"

"What's my name?"

"I don't know."

"Why not!?" Joker blurted out, eyes focused on Hachi. But Hachi just hung his head apologetically. Hachi definitely wasn't the type to lie so blatantly. It didn't seem like he was teasing him or playing dumb on purpose. It must've been from when he hit his head...

"You're sure you don't remember me at all? Not even a little bit? You don't know Phantom Thief Joker-"

The moment the words were out of Joker's mouth, Hachi's expression tightened. He glared at Joker with a sharp glint in his eyes. "Phantom Thief Joker!" Hachi shouted loudly.

"H-Hey..." Seeing how worked up Hachi was, Joker flinched for a second.

"I know that name!"

"Huh?"

"Phantom Thief Joker...! When I heard that name, anger suddenly swelled up in my mind! I remember that person did something awful to me!" Hachi stood menacingly with his fists clenched tightly at his side. "That's a name I couldn't forget if I tried! I'll never ever forgive Phantom Thief Joker! I have to take revenge on him at all costs!"

"Eh... um... uhhhh..."

"As it happens, you just brought up his name! Are you Phantom Thief Joker!?"

"Eh? Well, uhhh..." The gears in Joker's brain turned as fast as they could. Then he caught sight of his own clothes and threw out, "Uh, no, I'm... not Joker! My name is Kaitou Joe." Joker used the same name he just used on stage. Luckily, he was still wearing the costume too.

"...Joe-san?" Hachi asked inquisitively.

Joker responded without delay. "Yeah, that's me! I'm Kaitou Joe, and I travel around the world on this airship! I'm kind of a globetrotter! I go where I please, wherever the wind takes me!"

Hachi's eyes softened, and he bowed his head. "Oh, I see. I apologize for accusing you of being Phantom Thief Joker without knowing anything. That makes more sense. You were kind enough to treat my wound, Joe-san, so you couldn't possibly be that cold-blooded scoundrel Phantom Thief Joker."

"Say that again!? Who are you calling a scoundrel!?" Joker bent forward without thinking.

"Huh?"

"Uh, nothing, er... you shouldn't insult people like that," Joker quickly covered up.

"Oh, excuse me. Yes, you're right, Joe-san."

"Sure..." Joker said, leaning back into the couch. An awkward silence ensued. Both of them were trying to figure out what to say to each other. The living room was silent except for the sound of Hosshi chewing on konpeito.

Hachi opened his mouth. "All right, Joker-san. I have to leave now."

"Huh? Where are you going?" Joker asked in surprise.

"I get the feeling that I can't stay around here. Thanks to you reminding me, I figured out that my goal is to beat Phantom Thief Joker. So I'm going to head out and look for Joker!"

"Eh? No, wait, instead...!" Joker bent forward again in a sweat. "How about you stay here instead? You can travel with me in this airship and search for Joker while you're at it!"

"What?"

"Besides, you're hurt. You shouldn't push yourself until you get better. Maybe you'll remember something else in the meantime."

He couldn't let Hachi go off on his own at this juncture. If he went out and found out that "Joe" was Joker, things would snowball. So it fell to Joker to figure out a way to restore Hachi's lost memories.

"But I couldn't possibly impose on you..."

"It's fine! C'mon, just stay here. Okay, Hachi?"

Hachi considered this for a while. Then he looked up at Joker with shiny golden eyes. "All right! I'll take you up on your offer for now. Thank you, Joe-san!"

When Joker woke up the next day, a wonderful smell drifted past his nose. It was the delectable scent of toast and ham and egg and sausage; one of Hachi's usual breakfast menus.

"Hachi!"

Joker jumped out of bed and rushed to the breakfast table. He nearly put on his usual red suit before hurriedly switching to "Kaitou Joe"'s outfit. The chic look just wasn't his style.

When he entered the living room, Hachi spoke to him with that same old smile. "Good morning, Joe-san."

"Oh... right... good morning."

"Since I'm intruding on your hospitality, I made breakfast."

"Yeah, I can see..."

Hachi's memories still weren't back, it seemed. Joker sat down at the table and wolfed down breakfast with the usual gusto. It was the taste of Hachi's cooking, same as ever. The crispiness of the toast and firmness of the egg yolk was the same as ever too.

To the side, Hosshi was stuffing its cheeks with konpeito as if nothing was any different.

"Not a care in the world, huh, pseudocat...?" Joker mused. Meanwhile, Joker was on edge trying to keep his identity secret from Hachi.

"Well then, I'll join you too," said Hachi as he drew up a chair across from him and started to eat breakfast, as was his usual habit.

Everything was the same as normal. Except that Hachi, though he was right in front of Joker, didn't remember him at all...

Curious now, Joker asked, "Hachi, how's your injury healing?"

"The throbbing in my head's completely gone now. Thank you for that, Joker-san!" With the same beaming smile as ever, Hachi munched on his breakfast. "Oh yes, I did some investigation into Phantom Thief Joker."

"...!" Taken by surprise, Joker's utensils froze. "O-Oh really?"

"Yes. It appears that Phantom Thief Joker is an internationally-active thief. His manifold and elusive ways of showing up have given him the nickname of 'Miracle Maker'..."

"I do know that much." It was a weird feeling, hearing Hachi explain this.

"But somehow, I get the feeling that I know Joker. I've seen his face, of course, but I think I've already heard about the gum he uses, his trademark card techniques, and his other special tricks. I suppose I must've done research on my enemy..."

"Uh-huh..."

Well yeah, Joker thought to himself. Hachi was the one person who got to see Joker working up close and personal. It seemed that Hachi didn't remember that he'd been Joker's assistant, nor was he able to recognize the face of "Joe" as "Phantom Thief Joker". This is a real issue...

Joker crammed his mouth with a second piece of toast and swallowed it down. Then Hachi said to him, "By the way, I've had a lapse in memory like this before."

"Huh!? You what? Really!?" Joker was about to ask for more detail, but just then his phone rang. He glimpsed at the screen and saw the words "STUPID SPADE" displayed. That was what Joker had listed for his contact info.

Joker picked up his phone and answered, "Sup, this is Joker..." before catching himself. "Joe, can I help you?" he corrected.

The call automatically transferred to the tablet next to the table, and a camera feed switched on. The tablet screen showed a young man who looked puzzled by what Joker had called himself. "Do you have a moment?"

Phantom Thief Spade was the one on the other end of the line. He was a handsome youth with steadfast eyes and a shapely nose. His long dark blue hair flowed freely and was crowned by a yellow crest that tufted out at the top. Spade had been Joker's rival since they were kids.

"Uh, actually..." Joker was tongue-tied. If Spade somehow let slip that he was Phantom Thief Joker in front of Hachi, he'd be in big trouble. And he was pretty sure that Spade was going to talk about their mutual profession.

"Cutting to the chase, something surprising happened while I was on the job recently..." Spade started to talk without even waiting for a response from Joker.

Oh snap, if he keeps talking, I'm not gonna be able to keep my identity secret!

"Ah! Sorry, Spade! I've got something else to do right now. Seeya!"

"Huh? Wait, Jo-"

Before he could say the next syllable, Joker switched off the display.

Hachi asked in confusion, "Joe-san, are you sure?"

"Eh? Yeah, it's fine!"

"That was Phantom Thief Spade-san just now, wasn't it. I've met him more than a few times before."

"Huh? Oh really, you have?"

Apparently Hachi did remember Spade. Joker was a little mad that his memories of Spade were still quite intact, whereas his memories of Joker had been neatly excised.

"Sheesh, that's just perfect, isn't it..." Joker grumbled to himself. Just then, his phone rang again. He checked it and saw the words "SWORD-FOR-BRAINS QUEEN" on screen. The names he registered people under were very childish. "Not again..."

But if he didn't answer, she'd probably just keep calling. The tablet display came on. The girl who showed up on screen didn't even say hello before getting down to business. "Hey, can I talk to you, Jo-"

"OH HEY! Been a hot minute, Queen!" Joker frantically cut her off.

"Huh? It hasn't been that long, has it? You sure sound chipper."

Queen's eyes widened in surprise. She had beautiful blonde hair tied into two ponytails and a charming face, but contrary to appearances, she could be very rowdy.

Like Spade, Queen was a longtime affiliate of Joker. The three of them had trained under the same master, Phantom Thief Silver Heart, and learned the ABC's of thieving from him. Queen still lived with Silver Heart as his granddaughter.

"I need to talk to you about something. On my last job, I ran across this one phantom thief. There was something really weird about him."

"Oh, really." Joker's mind was elsewhere, and he already had the urge to hang up.

"So about this weird guy... hey, are you paying attention to me, Jo-"

"NOOOPE nope nope! I have no clue!" Joker drowned her out as fast as he could. Why was it that they picked today of all days to call him by name!? Talking to them right now really was a bad idea. "I'm busy right now! Talk to ya later!"

"Hey, wait-" But before Queen could finish, Joker turned off the display again.

Hachi, right in front of him, was confused. "Joe-san, you're busy?"

"W-Well, I'm eating the breakfast you made right now, aren't I? I'm the type to focus on my meals and eat them respectfully!" This was hardly something Joker would have said yesterday when he was gaming and munching on a fillet at the same time. If he'd had this attitude then, none of this would be happening right now.

"Ha ha, a compliment like that makes all the effort of making it worthwhile." Hachi smiled. "I suppose Queen-san just had bad timing too."

Apparently he still remembered Queen, too.

"You seem to have a lot of thief friends, Joe-san. I wonder about that weird phantom thief that Queen-san mentioned."

"Ha ha, I guess I do." Joker laughed hollowly and sighed. If he didn't restore Hachi's memories quick, he wouldn't be able to talk with Spade and Queen normally, and more importantly, he wouldn't be able to do any capers.

Joker asked Hachi, "Hey. You said something about having a memory lapse before, right?"

"Yes. I hit my head one time and got amnesia."

"What!? Really?"

"I think I just must've hit the wrong spot. But I got help and went back to normal that time..."

"You got help!? From who?" Joker impatiently leaned forward. If they used the same method, Hachi's memories might be restored.

"Umm... If I remember correctly, the person who helped me was..." Hachi traced back his fuzzy memories and at last exclaimed, "That's right, it was Hyakkimaru-san!"
